The Kick-Off package is an excellent way for us to start working together. It involves five specifically curated coaching sessions/workshops focusing on four specific problems.

I can also curate a custom package based on your needs.

New Engineering Leader

Are you just stepping into an engineering manager or lead role and feeling lost, or maybe you’ve just stepped into a manager-of-managers role for the first time? Then this package is for you.

The sessions:

  1. Introduction and Goal Definition: In the first session, we will define how we will work together, understand the problem you’re facing, and set goals to guide the rest of the process.
  2. Understanding Your Purpose: Knowing what you’re on this planet to do might sound grandiose, but it’s important to know what you really want to achieve. Are you trying to change the world, or set yourself or your family up for financial freedom as soon as possible? We will dig into what really drives you and where you want to go.
  3. Defining Your Leadership Manifesto: We’ll have a good handle on who you are at this point. Now it’s time to understand how you influence others and what you care about in terms of leadership.
  4. Action Plan: Based on the previous steps, we will outline how you will achieve the goals defined in the first session.
  5. Check-in or Specifics: In the last session, we can do one of two things: either save it to use later as a check-in to see how things are going and to keep you accountable, or use it to focus on something specific you want to work on.

The Unfixable Team

Do you have a team that can’t seem to deliver, and you can’t work out why? This package will help us map out a holistic view of your problem and

  1. Introduction and Goal Definition: In the first session, we will define how we will work together, understand the problem you’re facing, and set goals to guide the rest of the process.
  2. Define the System: A team is a complex system with myriad non-deterministic black-box elements and hundreds of inputs and outputs. By mapping out a simplified version of your team, we can see in more detail what’s going on and where problems might be arising.
  3. Map the Dependencies: In reality, your team likely has very little influence on its success internally. You need to be aware of all the dependencies. We will map out all of the pushes and pulls on your team and identify key areas to focus on.
  4. Core Topics: In the last couple of steps, we’ll have identified a few issues that we need to address. We’ll step through each one and look at how we might unlock success in those areas.
  5. Check-in or Specifics: In the last session, we can do one of two things: either save it to use later as a check-in to see how things are going and to keep you accountable, or use it to focus on something specific you want to work on.

Purpose

Struggling with the answer to the question “If I stopped doing my job today, what impact would it have on the world tomorrow?”. For many of us in the tech industry, the true answer to this question is really hard to see. This package will help you understand what your true purpose really is and how to align it with your career.

  1. Intro and Goal Definition: In the first session, we will define how we will work together, understand the problem you’re facing, and set goals to guide the rest of the process.

Non-Technical

Are you a non-technical lead with responsibility for a technical delivery? Are you a product or business lead with an engineering team that never quite delivers what you need? Or maybe you’re a founder building a technical product and struggling to find the right path to success? The Non-Technical package helps any non-technical lead feel comfortable leading a technical delivery.

  • Introduction and Goal Definition: In the first session, we will define how we will work together, understand the problem you’re facing, and set goals to guide the rest of the process.
  • Technical Leadership Health Check: Despite what some engineers might say, anyone can lead a technical organisation. However, there are some things you need to consider. We’ll review your current strengths and weaknesses so we understand what challenges lie ahead.
  • Measuring Success in Technology: Measuring the success of software engineers has become unnecessarily complex under the argument that “productivity isn’t just lines of code”. There are ways to simplify this so you and your engineering teams can work together towards shared success criteria.
  • Action Plan: Based on the previous steps, we will outline how you will achieve the goals defined in the first session.

Could you give me a bit more information?

Yes, but it’s a little hard to give information that covers everyone’s specific situation. It’s easier if you book a call, and I can provide you with any additional context you might need.

Are you a “qualified” coach?

Nope, in fact, by traditional coaching standards and processes, I’m probably defined as a rubbish coach. The main purpose of traditional coaching is to act as a mirror and help you realise you had the answer all along.

I will do a little bit of this; however, there is a strong chance that I will get far too excited about the topic, become opinionated and give you extreme and unrealistic advice in that moment.

The processes are defined to maximise the best of those extremes and your own knowledge and experience to explode the problem into a complex mess, then narrow down on the right direction.

How quickly can we start?

Tomorrow! I have availability through December and January, so we can kick off straight away with the intro session. There is some prep work required on both sides for most of the follow-up sessions, so those will likely start in the new year.

Do you offer any money-back guarantee?

It’s hard to refund time spent, but if at any point you decide the process is not for you, I’m happy to refund any outstanding sessions.
